donate to south river

In kind giving banner

Every day, South River lovers like you make profound contributions to the River's future through planned gifts to the South River Federation.  Your legacy gift helps us continue to advance our mission and with your support we can make the necessary investments in the people, science and technology to be successful - long into the future.

A gift through your will or estate allows you to leave a legacy that reflects your beliefs while having a real impact on the future of the South River and the Chesapeake Bay.  This lasting expression of your individual values also provides hope and inspires others.

Most of all, your charitable bequest is an enduring gift to future generations - your children and grandchildren; a gift of clean water and landscapes protected years from now.

Many supporters choose to make charitable gifts of securities to the South River Federation because it is a wonderful way to help save the River and possibly reduce personal capital gains or estate taxes.  We at the South River Federation appreciate your interest in supporting our work to preserve, protect, restore and celebrate the South River through a gift of stock.

Best of all, making a charitable bequest to South River Federation is a simple process.  If you have already named SRF in your estate plans, please let us know so we can welcome you to the Legacy Circle of the South River Federation family.

Bequests: Wills, Trusts, Retirement Accounts, and Life Insurance Policies

Designate South River Federation as the beneficiary of your will, trust, retirement account or life insurance policy.

  • Easy to do! Establish or modify at any time.
  • You remain in control of your assets throughout your lifetime
  • Enjoy an estate tax deduction
  • Reduce your family’s tax burden
  • Your gift provides future support for South River Federation mission to protect, preserve and restore the South River

  • Add South River Federation to your will or revocable trust using this simple language:
    • “I give and bequeath ( $____or [specific asset] or __ %) to the South River Federation (Tax ID 52-2301464), a nonprofit charitable organization headquartered at 2822 Solomons Island Rd, Edgewater, MD 21037, to be used in a manner they determine most critical to their mission of protecting, preserving and restoring the South River”
  • Designate South River Federation as a full, partial or contingent beneficiary of your retirement account, including an IRA, 401k, 403b or pension. Use a beneficiary designation form as provided by your plan custodian. Name South River Federation as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy, ensuring your estate benefits from an estate tax charitable deduction for the value of your gift.
    • Good news! The IRA Charitable Rollover (Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015) is now permanent, allowing charitably minded taxpayers 70 ½ or older to transfer up to $100,000 annually to charity without the gift being treated as a taxable distribution. Talk to your IRA administrator for more details.
    • Remember that gifting retirement accounts to family members (besides living spouses) can make the person subject to significant estate and income taxes.  Gifting to South River Federation, however, is tax-free!
  • Alternatively, donate an existing life insurance policy to South River Federation to enjoy an income tax deduction, the ability to deduct future premium payments (if any) and if the policy is on your life, you’ll even remove the value of the policy from your taxable estate!
